Inspiring the Next Generation of Tech Creators
Jun 22, 2021
In addition to holding the key to solving many of our most pressing challenges, it is no secret that computing touches nearly every facet of modern life. As a result, society can no longer afford for these fields to be disciplines for a chosen few. It is imperative that we are able to be inclusive of a broad range of students, so they can contribute to the driving the future of technologies that will impact the world and also participate in economic opportunities. For the past twenty years, I have been a part of a number of efforts to broaden participation in computing. In these experiences, I have observed that expanding pathways through non-traditional contexts such as dance, emotion, and community involvement can increase opportunities for capturing student interests. For this talk, I will share projects that changed my own perception of and engagement with computing fields as well as opportunities I have created or been a part of to extend student interests.
