vs. Blackbaud

School data chaos, solved.

Blackbaud’s systems were built separately and stitched together after the fact, so your school inherits the work of keeping them in sync. When something doesn’t line up, it’s your staff who has to reconcile it. Veracross was built as one system from day one, so there’s nothing to stitch together, nothing to reconcile.

The cost of staying

What Blackbaud’s fragmented system costs you

Hours lost to reconciliation

Discrepancies or duplicates often go unnoticed when varying departments maintain siloed systems. When ultimately discovered, the reconciliation process is tedious for that school.

Inefficient and disjointed reporting

Static dashboards may look polished, but answering leadership questions on the fly often requires exporting information to Excel or other third-party tools just to make sense of the data.

Decentralized access for families

Parents navigate separate systems for admissions, billing, and communication. Each additional login is another opportunity for a family to disengage or grow increasingly frustrated.

Support and training not guaranteed

Quick response times, minimal escalations, and readily available training modules are luxuries that must be purchased at an additional cost.

In their own words

What schools tell us about making the switch

“Some people had said, oh, Veracross is so expensive. But we had one application for communications, one for signing up for conferences, one for sending out communication for snow days, another for development, another for the business office. When we added all that up, there really wasn’t a huge price difference.

… I didn’t think it would be possible to go to Veracross, budget wise. And it really wasn’t much more money than all of the different pieces we were using, and it will save us so much time and headache. So don’t let that scare you off.”

Montrose School Medfield, MA

“Even our report card access. That was always a point of contention. How do I find my report card? Where do I go? And now I’ve had crickets. No one’s asked for help.”

Park City Day School Park City, UT

“It doesn’t do you a whole lot of good to have data if you can’t get to the data, if it’s so black boxed that it’s useless to you.”

The same categories. Two very different foundations.

Veracross and Blackbaud both cover admissions, academics, development, tuition, and accounting. The difference shows up in how each system is built: Veracross runs every department on one shared student record, while Blackbaud connects a set of separate products.

Frequently asked questions

What schools ask before they switch

Straight answers to the questions our admissions, business office, and IT contacts raise most often when comparing Veracross to Blackbaud.

What’s the single biggest difference between Veracross and Blackbaud?

Architecture. Veracross was built from the ground up on one shared database, so a student’s record is the same record whether admissions, the registrar, or the business office is looking at it. Blackbaud runs on a set of separate systems that sync data between each other rather than sharing one record.

Is Veracross really 100% browser-based?

Yes. Every Veracross solution, including reporting, runs in a standard web browser on any device. You won’t need Citrix, a VPN, or a desktop client, ever.

We already have Raiser’s Edge in our development office. Can Veracross replace it?

It can. Because Veracross keeps a lifelong record for every constituent, from prospective family through alumni donor, your development office gets giving history, activity records, and relationship context without exporting from a separate system. Schools moving off Raiser’s Edge tell us the biggest gain is no longer re-entering data that already exists somewhere else in the platform.

What does Veracross support actually look like day to day?

You reach a U.S.-based team with an average four-hour first response, at no extra cost. Live and self-serve training is free for every user, and you can schedule time directly with a consultant rather than waiting in a general queue.

How should we think about pricing and contracts?

Look past the first-year number on any proposal. Multi-year SIS contracts commonly start low and step up in later years, and support or training can be billed separately depending on the vendor. Ask every provider you’re evaluating, Veracross included, for the full multi-year price schedule and what’s included in support before you sign.

Is Veracross only for large, well-resourced schools?

No. Veracross serves 3,700 schools in 70+ countries, ranging from small independent and Montessori schools to large K-12 campuses and boarding schools. And because K-12 private and independent is the only industry Veracross builds for, the platform stays focused on the workflows independent schools actually run, rather than accommodating other types of organizations.

Will Veracross still connect to the other tools we use, like Canvas?

Yes. Veracross has an open API and a network of 200+ integration partners, including a bi-directional Canvas integration that syncs grades and rosters both ways. That’s a meaningful difference from a one-way integration, where teachers can end up entering grades twice.
