Who Owns My Data: Rethinking Data Policies and Procedures for Independent Schools

For many schools, extensive policies create an illusion of safety when it comes to data governance.  

In this webinar, we hear from Josh Raub, Manager of IT Services at The American School in Japan (ASIJ) on how independent schools can investigate and improve upon data governance. Sharing a real-life student incident that put a spotlight on their data stewardship, Taub recounts a journey of designing systems for every person rather than the average person. By tweaking processes for the small minority, ASIJ has improved data management for its entire community. The school has successfully moved from a ‘set and forget’ approach to a system of continuous training and clear communication. 

Later in the webinar, panellist Mark Orchison shares wisdom from his role as Founder & CEO of 9ine, a platform dedicated to tech, cyber, data privacy, AI, risk management and compliance specifically for schools. Orchison offers insights from the UNESCO AI competency framework for teachers, emphasising the need for human oversight across AI usage. 

Further discussion highlights the importance of vetting software vendors to ensure they comply with data protection standards. Schools are encouraged to use third-party assessments to validate vendor compliance.
