Pivoting from Task-Oriented Data to Insight-Oriented Data through Institutional Research

Traditionally, independent schools have tracked data to accomplish specific tasks: to store information in order to make admissions decisions, to gather grades and attendance for report cards, and to track finances, among others. Increasingly, however, school leaders, trustees, and accrediting organizations are recognizing the opportunity to connect and leverage the data from different school systems they have been amassing to derive insights about school operations and experiences that were previously considered “unmeasurable.”
Shifting from a task-oriented Data Culture to an insight-oriented Data Culture is a substantial institutional shift and can require increased attention to a school’s data infrastructure and governance, data analysis and literacy capacity, decision-making and leadership styles, and openness to change.
